Story Cave with Fiona Powell

A story cave is a place that is warm, sheltered, welcoming, where adults and teenagers can sit, share and learn stories together. Folktales contain many wonderful, mysterious, elements. In sharing folktales, we can open up the mind to an incredible understanding of our nature, our environment and of our cultures. We are separate from the tales, so that we can be shocked, but we do not have to personally grieve. We can track the experiences of the hero, watch the trickster, without being tricked or seduced or murdered ourselves.

There are so many lessons in the folktale, and so much joy, so many thrills, and danger that cannot harm us. If we do not perpetuate these tales, we may lose them. They need to stay on our lips, and in our brains. Each tale has myriad lessons for each of us. Not to mention, they are fun!

Led by Fiona Powell chief bard, who is an experienced, knowledgeable and generous storyteller, the group will meet once a month on the second Wednesday from 8:00 on. Free for members. A small fee of $5 for non members to support Fiona's continued work as a storyteller.

Growing Solutions

This growing season we will be offering Growing Solutions, a series at Wild Goose Farm for people interested in learning sustainable growing techniques.  We will be learning together how to design gardens to maximize outputs, build soil fertility, and grow perennial vegetables and plants for medicinal use.  Vance Reynolds (medicinal plants), Elizabeth Sterling (permaculture design), Kathy K-Gural (perennial vegetables) and one or two others (to be confirmed) will share our experiences and support you and your garden this growing season.

Growing Unique Medicinals
Vance Reynolds will share his knowledge of medicinal plants, in particular Ashwagandha (pictured above), Gotu Kola, Dang Shen (Poor Man's Ginseng, very sweet and tasty roots), Goji Berry (Wolfberry, great cold hardy fruit) and He Shou Wu (Chinese Knotweed). He will have some starts on hand for sale, at cost, of these medicinals for you to take home and plant in your own gardens. The second half of the workshop Vance will talk about growing other Chinese and Ayurvedic herbs including Wild Asparagus (Chinese and Ayurvedic), Velvet Beans (Mucuna),Chinese Rubber Tree (Du Zhong) and Rhodiola. Though he will not have live plants of these medicinals, he will bring seeds to distribute. If time permits, he'll talk about preparing Ashwagandha tinctures and capsules. The cost is free for Wild Goose Farm members and $5-$10 sliding scale per session for non members.

Permaculture Design
Elizabeth Sterling will share some tools and techniques from permaculture design we can take with us and to plan our own gardens this growing season.

Talking Beyond the Choir

Ever felt frustrated when confronted by a climate change denier? Ever wondered what to say? Ever gotten into an argument that went nowhere? IF SO, THIS TWO-SESSION WORKSHOP IS FOR YOU!

This workshop provides methods and techniques for talking with people about environmental and climate issues. Through role plays, exercises and discussions based on the latest research in how to effectively frame these issues, we will explore how to talk with people who hold very different opinions. This is a very hands-on workshop in which you will explore your own reactions and develop some practical ways to “talk beyond the choir.”

It will be held at the beautiful and relaxing Wild Goose Farm in Vicksburg. Sponsored by Susquehanna Valley Climate Action Network. Class offered by Penn Garvin, Doug Orbaker, and Joanne Huxster.
